Opening the Gates of the Cosmos: UNY Science Education Students Are Fascinated by Practical Lectures on Earth and Space Sciences

Students in the second semester of the Yogyakarta State University (UNY) Science Education Study Program on Thursday, May 2 2024, had the rare opportunity to attend an inspiring practitioner lecture in the Earth and Space Science (IPBA) course. The activity which was held in the Sugeng Mardiyono Seminar Room at the UNY Postgraduate School was the main highlight for the participants. With burning enthusiasm, they gathered at 09.00 to absorb the knowledge that would be conveyed by AR Sugeng Riadi, S.Pd., M.Ud., an experienced practitioner in the field of IPBA from the Solo Assalaam Astronomy Center. In a span of three hours, students are provided with material that is not only interesting, but also in-depth. Mr. AR Sugeng Riadi enthusiastically conveyed interesting topics such as the shape of the earth, the use of binoculars, galaxy exploration, and practical applications such as determining the Qibla and determining the start of fasting for Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr. Not only listening carefully, this activity also provides an opportunity for students to interact directly with the presenters. In the question and answer session, four students enthusiastically asked questions that enriched the discussion. The event was then closed with great emotion by Didik Setyawarno, M.Pd., the course lecturer who helped organize this activity. The closing of the event is not only the end of the lecture session, but also the beginning of building closer collaboration between the institution and the students. The handover of mementos and the signing of the Memorandum of Arrangement (MoA) were important moments that marked the agreement to continue collaborating in developing IPBA courses. As an invaluable complement, Mr. AR Sugeng Riadi also brought valuable souvenirs for the students. The IPBA learning media that is distributed is an additional source of inspiration for students to continue to develop their interest and knowledge in the field of earth and space science. With activities like this, the hope for the birth of a generation that is more educated and inspired in the field of earth and space science is increasingly strengthened.
