Visit of Jogjakarta Montessori School at Science Lab FMIPA UNY: Delving into the World of Electricity and Magnetism

Yogyakarta, November 17, 2023 - A total of 42 6th grade students from Jogjakarta Montessori School and 3 accompanying teachers filled the Science Lab of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of Yogyakarta State University (UNY) on Friday, November 17, 2023, at 08.00. They were warmly received by 4 Science Education lecturers and 8 students as practicum assistants. This visit was initiated with the aim of providing direct experience to students in understanding the material of Electricity and Magnetism. The elementary students were divided into 8 groups, each consisting of 5-6 members. The lecturers and students acted as mentors in carrying out the four practicum topics that had been prepared. The acceptance process began with remarks from a lecturer representative, explaining the outline of the activities to be carried out. After that, the students were divided into small groups and engaged themselves in four practicum topics in turn. The first topic was the creation of a simple electric motor, followed by a practicum on a simple generator and Faraday's law. The students were also invited to try to make a simple magnet and test the applicable laws through a magnetic balance practicum. During the activity, students were accompanied by lecturers and practicum assistant students who provided guidance and explained each stage of the experiment. Through this interaction, students are expected to understand scientific concepts more deeply. This visit not only provided students with practical experience, but also broadened their horizons regarding the application of science in everyday life. It is hoped that this kind of activity can inspire students to be more interested and excited in learning science.
