Integrating Science and Spirituality: UNY Community Service Program Collaborates with MGMP IPA Gunungkidul through DBUS Workshop
Primary tabs

As part of enriching science education (IPA) and nurturing students' holistic character, the Community Service Program of Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (PPM UNY) in collaboration with the Science Teacher Working Group (MGMP IPA) of Gunungkidul held a workshop titled "Discovery-Based Unity of Science (DBUS) Model to Enhance Students' Spiritual Attitudes." This event took place on August 7, 2025, from 08.00 to 11.30 WIB at SMP Negeri 1 Wonosari and was attended by 15 science teachers. This workshop provided a strategic platform for the MGMP IPA Gunungkidul community to integrate scientific approaches with spiritual values in the learning process. The DBUS model emphasizes scientific discovery not merely for outcomes but also for deep meaning and reflection. The workshop began with an opening speech by Agus Maryanto, M.Pd., Principal of SMP Negeri 1 Wonosari, followed by remarks from Sigit Suryono, S.Pd., M.Pd., as the Chair of MGMP IPA Gunungkidul, and Dr. Winarto, M.Pd., as the representative from UNY. The core of the activity was a simulation of DBUS-based science learning, delivered by Triyono, S.Si., M.Pd., and moderated by Ida Susilowati, S.Pd., S.Si. In the simulation session, a learning activity was reconstructed as part of a lesson study using previously introduced materials, followed by reflective group discussions. During the lesson study, MGMP IPA Gunungkidul teachers were accompanied by facilitators from UNY to guide the implementation of the DBUS approach. This was designed to provide them with a clear picture of how to apply the model in their respective classrooms. This workshop marked a significant step toward strengthening teachers’ understanding of how DBUS can holistically connect various branches of science—biology, physics, chemistry, and geoscience—with spiritual values such as awe of God's creation, awareness of nature’s orderliness, and a sense of responsibility toward the environment. Through this approach, science learning becomes not only a cognitive experience but also a means to shape students' spiritual character.
