FMIPA UNY Holds General Lecture on AI for Sustainable Education with Expert from Thailand
Primary tabs

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY), held a General Lecture entitled “AI & Digital Technology-enhanced Learning for Sustainability Education” on May 6, 2026. The event featured Assoc. Prof. Niwat Srisawasdi, Ph.D., an expert in Science and Technology Education from Khon Kaen University, Thailand, as the keynote speaker. The general lecture was attended by undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students of the Science Education Study Program at FMIPA UNY. The activity was conducted interactively, discussing the strategic role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital technology in transforming science learning in the era of digital natives.
In his presentation, Prof. Niwat emphasized that AI does not merely function as a supporting tool, but also as a learning process enhancement that can facilitate the understanding of complex and abstract scientific concepts. He also highlighted the importance of transforming educational paradigms, including strengthening data literacy, computational thinking, and integrating AI ethics into the curriculum. Furthermore, the concept of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) was expanded into TPACK-AI, which emphasizes the integration of content knowledge, pedagogy, and AI-based technology in teaching practices. This approach becomes essential for educators in designing learning experiences that are relevant to the needs of new-generation learners.
The lecture also showcased various examples of technology implementation in science learning, such as interactive simulations, augmented reality (AR), game-based inquiry learning, and AI-based applications to support inquiry-based learning. These approaches have been proven to improve conceptual understanding, learning motivation, and active student engagement in the learning process. In addition, Prof. Niwat emphasized that the characteristics of new-generation learners—who are highly visual, adaptive to digital technology, and inclined toward personalized and non-linear learning—require educators to design more flexible, interactive, and human-centered learning environments. Through this activity, it is expected that students and lecturers will gain broader insights into the use of AI in science education and be encouraged to develop innovative learning approaches that support sustainable education. This event also serves as part of FMIPA UNY’s efforts to strengthen internationalization and enhance the quality of technology-based learning within the academic environment.
