UNY Science Education Department Empowers Sleman Teachers Through AI Integration and Lab Optimization

Demonstrating its ongoing commitment to elevating the quality of science education, the Science Education Study Program of Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) conducted a Community Service (Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat / PkM) program for science teachers under the MTs Science Teacher Forum (MGMP IPA MTs) of Sleman Regency. The initiative integrated two key community service programs: "Training on the Development of Science Practicum and Learning Media Based on Problem-Based Learning Assisted by Artificial Intelligence for Sleman MTs Science MGMP Teachers," led by Dr. Laifa Rahmawati, M.Pd. and "Competency Development for Science Teachers and Laboratory Heads in Optimizing Laboratory Functions under the National Curriculum," led by Yuli Arti, M.Pd. The event commenced with welcoming remarks from PkM team representative Dr. Ismail Fikri Natadiwijaya. In his speech, he emphasized that enhancing teacher competency is essential to supporting the implementation of the National Curriculum, particularly through practical learning, laboratory optimization, and the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in science instruction.
Expressing her appreciation, Saptini, M.Pd., Vice Chairperson II of the Sleman MTs Science MGMP, noted that the training directly aligns with the needs of educators facing 21st-century teaching challenges. She voiced hope that the outcomes would be effectively implemented across local madrasahs and serve as the foundation for sustainable collaboration between the forum and UNY. To formalize their commitment, representatives from both institutions signed a Cooperation Agreement (PKS) and an Implementation of Agreement (IA). The agreement establishes a framework for joint programs in education, research, and community outreach. Prior to the core sessions, participants completed a pre-test to assess their baseline knowledge in lab management, practicum design, and AI applications.
The main sessions began with a presentation on optimizing laboratory functions within the National Curriculum. Participants explored the strategic role of laboratories as inquiry-based learning hubs, key management techniques, safety protocols, and methods for maximizing facility usage to fulfill curriculum standards. The second session focused on developing Problem-Based Learning (PBL) science practicums and media using AI technology. Lecturers introduced methods for applying PBL in science classrooms, designing contextual lab exercises, and using various AI platforms to draft practicum modules, student worksheets, teaching media, and assessment tools more efficiently. Following the lectures, participants joined a hands-on mentoring workshop. Working in groups, teachers drafted PBL-based lab modules and AI-assisted learning tools tailored to their school curricula. The UNY team provided direct guidance to ensure alignment between learning objectives, PBL syntax, practical activities, and AI tools. Through this program, UNY aims to elevate the professional standards of MTs science teachers and lab directors across Sleman Regency. Beyond producing functional instructional materials, the newly signed Implementation of Agreement paves the way for continued collaboration between UNY’s Science Education Study Program and the Sleman MTs Science MGMP to advance science education quality in the future.
