Lecturers and students from the Science Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) held a dissemination session and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) under the UNY PKM Mbangun Desa Program on Thursday, July 30, 2026. The activity was part of a community engagement program entitled “Assisting the Management of Museum Kolong Tangga, Kasihan, Bantul, through a Science–Culture Literacy Corner to Strengthen Educational Services and Enhance the Attractiveness of Village Tourism.” Conducted via Zoom, the session brought together the Museum Kolong Tangga management team and the lecturers and students involved in the community engagement program from the UNY Science Education Study Program. The program represents a concrete contribution by the university to the development of partner villages by strengthening local potential, particularly in culture-based education and tourism.

The dissemination session and FGD were part of a series of activities that began with initial coordination between the UNY PKM Mbangun Desa team and the management of Museum Kolong Tangga. During this preliminary stage, both parties discussed the partner’s needs, the direction of the program, and activities that could support the improvement of the museum’s educational services. The program also included the signing of an Implementation of Agreement (IA) as the formal basis for the collaboration within the UNY PKM Mbangun Desa scheme. In addition, the team identified the collections and traditional games available at Museum Kolong Tangga to determine which games could be integrated with scientific concepts. The results of this initial identification served as the basis for discussion during the dissemination session and FGD.

The activity began with remarks from the Head of the UNY PKM Mbangun Desa Team, Dr. Winarto. He emphasized that the program was founded on the principle of an equal partnership. According to him, collaboration should not place one party above another. Instead, every activity should be carried out collaboratively by considering the contributions, experiences, and needs of all parties involved. The next remarks were delivered by Irma Retyana, S.Psi., Program Director of Museum Kolong Tangga. She welcomed the UNY PKM Mbangun Desa program because it had been designed in response to the partner’s actual needs, particularly the need to strengthen the museum’s educational services and increase its appeal to visitors. The collaboration is expected to provide a more engaging learning experience by integrating scientific knowledge and cultural values through traditional games.

Following the dissemination session, the activity continued with an FGD to discuss the concept and development stages of the Science-Culture Literacy Corner. The discussion produced an initial design for the literacy corner, an agreement on the traditional games to be featured, and a plan for training the staff of Museum Kolong Tangga. The team also agreed to conduct a pilot activity or visitor simulation after all learning materials and supporting resources had been developed. The Science-Culture Literacy Corner is designed as an educational space that introduces traditional games not only as part of cultural heritage but also as media for learning scientific concepts. Each game will be accompanied by information about its cultural background, the scientific principles involved, instructions for use, and activity materials for visitors. The team will also develop science-culture literacy kits so that educational activities can be implemented practically, systematically, and independently by the museum staff.

The next stage of the UNY PKM Mbangun Desa Program is the development of the literacy corner, including its media, kits, and other supporting materials. Once all materials have been completed, training will be provided to the staff of Museum Kolong Tangga so that they can independently manage and facilitate science-culture literacy activities. The program will then proceed with a pilot activity or visitor simulation scheduled for the end of August 2026. Through the UNY PKM Mbangun Desa Program, Museum Kolong Tangga is expected to provide increasingly interactive and contextual educational services. The Science-Culture Literacy Corner is also expected to strengthen the museum’s role as a space for preserving traditional games while simultaneously serving as a science learning resource closely connected to the everyday lives and cultural contexts of the community.
