S1 Science Education Students Attend Guest Lecture with Visiting Professor from the University of Warwick
Primary tabs

The S1 Science Education Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY), held a Guest Lecture with a Visiting Professor as part of the STEM course. The session featured Dr. Yudhi Ariadi, Assistant Professor in Teaching in Engineering Design, School of Engineering, University of Warwick, United Kingdom. Held on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, the guest lecture focused on “Engineering Design Process: Exploring the Core of Successful Engineering Design.” The session provided students with insights into engineering design processes, particularly how a problem can be identified, developed into a potential solution, and tested through a systematic design process.
The guest lecture was conducted across three class sessions involving S1 Science Education students from classes 5C, 5D, and 5A. The first session was held from 7:30–9:10 a.m., followed by class 5D from 9:20–11:10 a.m., and class 5A from 11:10 a.m.–12:50 p.m. All sessions ran smoothly. Throughout the lecture, students followed the presentation with enthusiasm and active attention. The topic was highly relevant to STEM learning as it provided students with an opportunity to understand how science, technology, engineering, and mathematics can be integrated in addressing real-world problems.
The presence of the Visiting Professor also provided an important opportunity for students to gain an international perspective on engineering design, while broadening their understanding of educational practices and design development in an international higher education context. For future science teachers, understanding the engineering design process can serve as valuable preparation for designing STEM learning that is contextual, creative, and oriented toward problem solving. The activity also strengthened the commitment of the S1 Science Education Study Program, FMIPA UNY, to providing learning experiences that connect students with academics and professionals from the international academic community. Thus, learning extends beyond regular classroom instruction and includes direct interaction with experts from overseas universities. Through this guest lecture, students are expected to develop a deeper understanding that STEM is not merely a collection of separate disciplines, but an integrated approach that encourages thinking, designing, problem solving, and the development of solutions.
