IPBA Guest Lecture Brings BMKG Perspectives on Climate Change, Disaster Risk, and AI Applications
Primary tabs

The Science Education Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY), held a practitioner lecture for the Earth and Space Science (IPBA) course featuring Dr. Ida Pramuwardani, M.Si., Acting Director of Public Meteorology at the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) as the guest speaker. Held online on Friday (25/9), the session provided students with practical insights into weather and climate dynamics, disasters, climate change, and the transformation of meteorological and climatological information services. Dr. Ida discussed the reality of climate change in Indonesia, including rising global temperatures, changing weather patterns, the projected melting of permanent ice in the Jayawijaya Mountains, and land subsidence and seawater intrusion in parts of northern Java. These developments demonstrate that climate change is not merely an environmental issue but also has direct implications for society and various sectors. Students were also introduced to the major factors controlling Indonesia's weather and climate, including ENSO (El Niño and La Niña), the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), tropical and equatorial waves, the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), the Asian-Australian monsoon, and tropical cyclones. These phenomena influence rainfall patterns and can subsequently affect agriculture, food prices, and food security.
A key topic of the lecture was BMKG's transformation toward Impact-Based Forecast (IBF) services. This approach shifts the focus from simply asking “what will happen?” to considering “what will be the impact and what should be done?” Students learned how weather and climate information can be translated into more relevant risk information for communities and different sectors. Dr. Ida also highlighted the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) throughout BMKG's modelling and information services. AI is being applied in various stages, including pre-processing, data assimilation, downscaling, parameterization, extreme weather detection, and information dissemination. Radar and satellite data are also combined with numerical models using machine learning and deep learning approaches. The discussion further explored observation challenges in remote and disadvantaged regions, tsunami early warning systems, and practical steps communities can take to reduce disaster risks. Students were encouraged to understand local seasonal and weather patterns, recognize environmental and disaster-prone areas, and be familiar with safety protocols for hydrometeorological disasters. The practitioner lecture strengthened the connection between IPBA learning and real-world issues. Insights from BMKG provided students with a broader understanding of the relevance of meteorology, climatology, digital technology, and disaster literacy to contemporary science education.
