Islamic Astronomy Workshop Bridges Science and Faith in Perth

On Sunday, September 7, 2025, Dr. Sabar Nurohman, M.Pd. from Yogyakarta State University delivered a lecture titled “Learning Astronomy Applications: A Guide to Determining Qibla Direction and the Beginning of the Hijri Month” to the Indonesian diaspora community under The Do Gooders and Friends Inc at William Langford Community House, Perth, Western Australia. This event was part of UNY’s Community Service Program, designed to integrate modern astronomy with Islamic principles, particularly in determining the Qibla direction and the start of the Hijri months using astronomy-based applications.

Dr. Sabar emphasized that astronomy is not merely the study of celestial bodies but is closely connected to Islamic practices such as prayer times and the Hijri calendar. Ade Scaf, President of The Do Gooders and Friends Inc, expressed great appreciation, highlighting that Islamic astronomy provides essential knowledge for Muslims in Western Australia, who often face challenges in determining prayer directions and Islamic calendar dates. The program is expected to enhance Islamic astronomy literacy and strengthen the integration of science and faith among the Indonesian Muslim diaspora in Perth.
