Mentoring for the Development of Science Practicum Edu-Game Devices Based on Virtual Reality for HOTS in Schools with Limited Laboratory Facilities
Primary tabs

In an effort to improve the quality of science learning in schools with limited laboratory facilities, the Research-Based Community Service (PKM) team from Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, consisting of Prof. Dr. Asri Widowati, S.Pd.Si., M.Pd. (chair), Dr. Laifa Rahmawati, M.Pd., Dr. Winarto, M.Pd., Dita Puji Rahayu, S.Pd., M.Pd., Yuli Arti, M.Pd., Dea Cindy Shonia, S.Pd., M. Fahrezy, S.Pd., and Nurinda Aqmalia Hafidza, S.Pd., organized a mentoring program on the development of Science Practicum Edu-Game Devices based on Virtual Reality (VR). The activity was also supported by students Alya Dwiyussa Herdiyani, Firyal Amani Azzahra, Angelina Pratama, and Akbar Nata Nagoro. This program targeted science teachers from the Kulon Progo MGMP IPA (Science Subject Teachers’ Forum), aiming to strengthen teachers’ ability to design technology-based learning media that support Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS).
The mentoring program was divided into two sessions: online and offline. The online session took place on August 2, 2025, via Zoom Meeting and featured four presentation topics:
- Concept of Edu-Game – delivered by Dr. Winarto, M.Pd.
- HOTS Learning and Its Assessment – delivered by Dita Puji Rahayu, S.Pd., M.Pd.
- Immersive AR and VR in Science Learning – delivered by Dr. Laifa Rahmawati, M.Pd.
- Student Worksheets/Teaching Modules Integrating AR/VR in Science – delivered by Prof. Dr. Asri Widowati, S.Pd.Si., M.Pd.
The session concluded with an interactive discussion actively participated in by the MGMP IPA Kulon Progo teachers. The offline session was held on August 9, 2025, at the Multipurpose Hall of SMP Negeri 1 Pengasih, attended by 30 participants. In this session, the UNY team introduced Millea Lab and demonstrated the use of Virtual Reality devices. This was followed by an edugame learning simulation that teachers could adapt for their classroom practice. Through this program, the team hopes that the mentoring results can provide an alternative solution for science practicum learning in resource-limited schools, as well as promote higher-quality learning that is contextual, engaging, and capable of challenging students’ critical thinking skills.
