Successful Digital Literacy Training for Educators in Science Education Study Program by TRUST Unified System

From July 2-4, 2024, TRUST Unified System successfully organized a digital literacy training and certification aimed at enhancing the skills of educators and educational staff in the digital era. The three-day training was attended by four Science Education lecturers, namely Prof Insih Wilujeng, Putri Anjarsari, Ismail Fikri Natadiwijaya, and Rizki Arumning Tyas. Each day, participants engaged in intensive six-hour sessions filled with important and applicable materials.

Day One: Introduction to Digital Literacy

The first day of training began with an introduction to digital literacy. Participants were introduced to the basic concepts of digital literacy, including utilizing information from various sources accessible via computers. Additionally, they learned about the benefits of digital literacy in everyday life and education. The session continued with the five essential digital literacy skills every educator should possess:

  • Digital Culture: Understanding the culture and ethics of digital technology usage.
  • Critical Thinking: Evaluating information critically and objectively.
  • Online Safety Skills: Maintaining safety and privacy while engaging in online activities.
  • Digital Ethics: Upholding ethical standards in digital interactions and information sharing.
  • Finding Information: The ability to search for and find relevant and accurate information.

Day Two: Visual Design for Academics

On the second day, the training focused on visual design, which is crucial in an academic context. Participants gained knowledge about planning, implementing, and evaluating effective visual designs. This material is designed to help lecturers deliver course content in a more engaging and easily understandable manner. Additionally, participants learned how to create interactive learning media, such as digital books (e-books) and pop-up books, which can be highly beneficial teaching aids.

Day Three: Advanced Tips in Digital Literacy

The final day of training focused on providing advanced, more technical and specific tips. Some interesting topics covered included:

  • Creating Different Pictures in One Event: This technique helps lecturers present visual variations in a single presentation.
  • Adding Playing Video Backgrounds: Participants learned how to add video backgrounds that can enhance the dynamics of a presentation.
  • Animating Series in Charts: The ability to create more interactive and engaging charts.

Participants were very enthusiastic about the entire training series. They found the materials presented to be highly relevant and applicable, especially in the context of ICT in Science Education lectures. This training is expected to inspire lecturers to develop more modern and effective teaching methods.
