Microlearning Innovation: Future Learning Strategy at FMIPA UNY with Mr. Timbul Pardede from SEAMEO SEAMOLEC

On September 25-26, 2024, 3rd semester students of Science Education FMIPA UNY had the opportunity to attend a guest lecture by an education practitioner, Mr. Timbul Pardede, MIDT from SEAMEO SEAMOLEC. The lecture, which took place in Meeting Room 2 FMIPA UNY, was entitled "Microlearning: The Future of Post-Pandemic Teaching and Learning" with the main theme "Maximize Understanding, Minimize Time Spent."
This lecture introduced innovations in microlearning-based learning design, a concept that prioritizes concise yet dense learning to answer the challenges of post-COVID-19 pandemic learning. Mr. Timbul Pardede invited prospective science teacher students to understand the concept of microlearning in the context of a blended learning model, which combines a distance learning system (PJJ) with face-to-face methods.
The lecture began with a joint reflection on the PJJ experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. Students are invited to analyze in terms of learning design, teaching materials, presentation of materials, and services to students. After reflection, Mr. Timbul introduced microlearning models, explaining why and how this strategy can improve learning effectiveness by packaging teaching materials that are more focused and in-depth per subject matter.
The material presented also includes various types of media in microlearning, such as:
- Micro Video Media: Using short videos lasting 5-8 minutes with in-depth visual and material harmonization.
- Micro Animation Media: Using short animations lasting 30 seconds to 3 minutes, with material reinforcement using images, sound, and text.
- Micro Graphic Media: Relying on infographics to present complex concepts with easy-to-understand visualizations
Students also gain insight into how microlearning continues to develop and adapt to changing learning needs. This lecture is closed with an assignment in the form of a Collaboration Project where students work in groups to develop microlearning content as independent teaching materials in the PJJ system.
Through this microlearning strategy, students are invited to be better prepared to face the challenges of learning in the digital era, combining creativity, technology, and more effective learning methods.
