The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Yogyakarta State University (UNY), organized an International Guest Lecture on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at Meeting Room 3, FMIPA UNY. The event featured Prof. Ahmad Qablan, Ph.D., an expert in Science Education and Sustainability from United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), as the keynote speaker. Carrying the theme “Science and Engineering Practices in the 21st Century,” the lecture was attended by undergraduate (S1), master's (S2), and doctoral (S3) students of the Science Education Study Program. The activity was part of the International Guest Lecture and Visiting Professor Program, aimed at broadening students’ perspectives on current developments in global science education.
The session was moderated by Putri Anjarsari, S.Si., M.Pd. In his presentation, Prof. Ahmad Qablan highlighted the importance of Science and Engineering Practices (SEP) as a key component of 21st-century science learning. Through this approach, students are encouraged not only to understand scientific concepts but also to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, design, data interpretation, and scientific communication skills. Prof. Ahmad also emphasized that modern science education should provide authentic learning experiences that actively engage students in scientific inquiry and engineering design processes. Consequently, science learning should move beyond conceptual understanding and focus on developing competencies relevant to contemporary global challenges.
The lecture was highly interactive and received enthusiastic participation from students. Participants took the opportunity to discuss the implementation of Science and Engineering Practices in science education, curriculum development, and the challenges of science teaching in the era of digital transformation. Through this international academic activity, students are expected to gain broader global insights, enrich their academic perspectives, and strengthen their readiness to become educators and researchers who contribute to innovative, sustainable, and globally competitive science education.
