Environmental Awareness Action through Water Filtration by UNY Educational Practice Student at SMPN 15 Yogyakarta
Primary tabs

Erin Susanti, a Science Education student participating in the Educational Practice (Praktik Kependidikan/PK) program at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY), conducted an Environmental Awareness Action through Water Filtration at SMPN 15 Yogyakarta on Thursday, September 10, 2026. The activity aimed to increase students' awareness of the importance of maintaining water quality and protecting the environment through simple, interactive learning activities closely related to their daily lives. The activity was conducted with students of Class 8I through a water filtration practical using simple tools and materials that are readily available in the surrounding environment.
During the activity, students were introduced to the water filtration process through a simple practical experiment using easily accessible tools and materials. Students observed the condition of the water before and after the filtration process and then discussed the causes of water turbidity, the materials that can be used as filters, and the changes that occurred after filtration. Through hands-on practice, students were able to connect science concepts with environmental issues encountered in everyday life.
The activity was conducted actively, involving students in observation and discussion. Working in groups, students carried out the filtration process and observed the results. The activity was expected to foster an understanding that maintaining water cleanliness and quality is a shared responsibility that can begin with actions taken in the surrounding environment.
The activity was supervised by Mrs. Retno Yosiani Tanjung Sari, S.Pd., as the school-based mentor, and Mr. Happri Novriza Setya Dhewantoro, M.Pd., as the Field Supervisor (Dosen Pembimbing Lapangan/DPL). Their supervision supported the implementation of the environmental education activity, ensuring that it ran effectively and provided students with a meaningful learning experience.
The water filtration activity also represented one of the students' contributions to supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The activity is related to SDG 4: Quality Education, as it provided students with hands-on learning experiences through contextual education. In addition, the activity supported SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation by introducing students to the importance of water quality and the water filtration process. Furthermore, the activity contributed to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, as an understanding of clean water is closely related to efforts to maintain health.
Through the Environmental Awareness Action through Water Filtration, the UNY Educational Practice student sought to provide educational experiences that not only enhanced students' understanding of science concepts but also fostered environmental awareness. This simple activity is expected to encourage students to become more concerned about water and environmental cleanliness and to adopt responsible practices for conserving water resources in their daily lives.
