Strengthening Science Literacy Through Measurement Learning in Class VII C of "SMPIT LHI BANGUNTAPAN"

Aulia Putri Maulidia is a student of the Science Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) who is currently carrying out a Teaching Practicum (Praktik Kependidikan/PK). As part of her real contribution to supporting the educational process at school, she independently conducted a lesson on measurement in Class VII C at SMPIT LHI Banguntapan on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. This activity is also closely related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 on Quality Education, which aims to provide an inclusive, relevant, and meaningful learning experience for students.

This lesson was designed to help students understand the basic concept of measurement while also training their skills in accurately reading measurement results using various measuring instruments. The session began with the material being delivered in stages so that the information could be well absorbed. Four main topics were covered: the use of a micrometer screw gauge, time measurement using a stopwatch, mass measurement using a three-beam balance, and how to measure irregularly shaped objects.

In the micrometer screw gauge material, students learned the technique of reading the main scale and the vernier scale to obtain accurate measurement values. In the stopwatch material, students were trained to read time readings and convert them into standard units. Next, when studying the three-beam balance, students learned to identify and add up the values on each beam of the balance. Finally, in the material on irregularly shaped objects, students were taught the method of measuring the change in liquid volume to determine the volume of the object.

After the material was presented, students were given practice questions to test their understanding. During the process of working on the questions, the student teacher played an active role in providing guidance and assisting students who had difficulty understanding the steps to the solution. The success of this activity was also inseparable from the full support of the supervising teacher, who helped direct the implementation of the lesson.

The students' response during the activity was very positive. They were actively engaged and tried to apply the concepts that had been taught, especially when reading the scales of measuring instruments and completing practice questions. Providing these exercises proved effective in reinforcing memory, training accuracy, and sharpening students' critical thinking. In addition, the measurement material was linked to real-life applications so that students became aware of the relevance of the knowledge they were learning.

For the student teacher, this independent teaching experience became an important milestone in preparing herself as a future professional educator. She learned to structure a coherent learning flow, deliver material in easily understandable language, and manage classroom dynamics firsthand. Meanwhile, for the school, the involvement of the practicum student helped support a more varied and interactive teaching and learning process. This measurement lesson became a valuable experience that brought real benefits to both students and the student teacher in realizing quality education.

This activity is expected to provide a meaningful learning experience for students and support the improvement of learning quality as part of achieving SDG 4: Quality Education.
