Laboratory Management Mock Study to the Faculty of Science and Data Analytics, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember

One of the programs carried out in the Independent Campus Competition Program (PKKM) of the Science Education Department is to develop partnerships to conduct a mock study of laboratory governance. On June 25, 2024, the Department of Science Education FMIPA UNY represented by Didik Setyawarno, Widodo Setiyo Wibowo, and Rizki Arumning Tyas had the opportunity to visit the Faculty of Science and Data Analytics (FSAD) at the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS). This visit aims to benchmarking and strengthening cooperation in the framework of preparing laboratory safety standards based on STEM projects. FSAD ITS is known as a leader in laboratory governance, and has a variety of sophisticated tools that are an important reference for UNY.

The delegation from UNY was received by the Dean, Head of the Physics Department, Head of the Chemistry Department, Head of the Biology Department, and Head of Administrative Services at the 3rd Floor Rectorate Building. On this occasion, they explained about structural governance in ITS and laboratory management at the department level. The discussion covered important topics such as equipment maintenance, implementation of lecture practicum activities, and research. The session ended with the signing of a cooperation agreement and the handover of mementos between the two institutions, marking a mutual commitment to continue collaborating in laboratory development and education.

Next, the group from UNY toured the laboratories of the Departments of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. They had the opportunity to meet and discuss directly with laboratory heads, lecturers, and students who were conducting research. This visit provided a very comprehensive insight because they could see all the facilities and activities in the three departments. Although UNY is an educational university and ITS is a technology institute, many of the practicum topics studied have similarities, such as in the Basic Physics Laboratory. FSAD ITS is very open to further cooperation opportunities that have already been initiated, including student internship programs and lectures with guest lecturers. This visit is expected to improve the safety and efficiency standards of laboratories at UNY, as well as strengthen cooperative relationships between institutions for a better future in education and research.
