Science Laboratory Safety Guidelines Development Workshop Held at FMIPA UNY

Yogyakarta, October 30, 2024 — The Science Education Department of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) Yogyakarta State University (UNY) held a workshop on the development and preparation of science laboratory safety guidelines. This activity is part of the development of the STEM Lab Project within the framework of the Independent Campus Competition Program.
 

The workshop, which took place in Meeting Room 3, FMIPA UNY, presented an experienced resource person, Prof. Anom Bowolaksono, Ph.D. from the University of Indonesia, who discussed the Management of Science Laboratory Safety and Health for Higher Education Levels. In his material, Prof. Anom emphasized the importance of the participation of all stakeholders, including deans, top management, laboratory heads, laboratory staff, students, researchers, and safety and security officers. He emphasized that the commitment of all parties in implementing the principles of safety, health, and security in the laboratory is very important to achieve an effective biorisk management system and environmental protection.
Furthermore, Mr. Setyo Budi Mulyono, S.Si. from PUDAK Scientific, also provided material on occupational safety and health in the laboratory. He explained various mitigation strategies that need to be implemented, such as raising awareness of the importance of a comprehensive biorisk management system, creating written regulations that support leadership, and conducting regular training for laboratory workers on policy development and emergency response. Performance evaluation through audits and continuous improvement were also emphasized as important steps to achieve optimal levels of biorisk management.
